Wireless Market Just Got Hotter.

Sprint threw down the gauntlet today when they announced their $99.99 ”Simply Everything(SM)” Plan. This will be very interesting to see develop and how other cell phone carriers react. I expect Verizon, AT&T and others will have a plan similar withing 90 days.

Right now I don’t have a cell phone and am shopping for one. One thing I have noticed between all the carriers is that all the plans are pretty much the same. Minutes are withing 50-100 minutes of each other, features are similar, add-on packages like unlimited text and picture messaging are similar, etc.  So what separates one carrier from another?

Network and Phones and Friends.

Network - who really has the best network? Verizon? AT&T? Sprint/Nextel? Virgin Mobile (hehe)? Everyone piggy backs off everyone else it seems and coverage is probably good for the most part wherever you go.

Phones - Verizon used to have the sorriest phones but as I’ve been shopping recently I’ve noticed their phones are now some of the nicest ones on the market (with the exception of the iPhone). They finally have realized that people like good looking phones that are functional as well.

Friends/Family - Probably one of the biggest decisions in picking up a phone. What does your friends and family use? With most networks having free mobile-to-mobile calling within that network it can be a sealing decision for most people when picking up new phone or plan. I know that is my major point while looking at the moment.

I will say, it has been nice to not have a phone around. People can’t reach me while driving or when I’m in the office or out of the house. It’s like the good ol’ days. :)
