What Jobs are Hot in the Tech World
So what careers are moving and shaking in the IT world? I was talking to my buddy Dave today and we were talking about what IT stuff is coming down the pipe and how would someone get into that field with no experience.
In my limited experience as a recruiter and as an IT guy myself, this is what I’ve seen that seems to be hot/moving/in-demand, etc.:
- Anyone with good ERP backgrounds - implementation, programming, design, etc.
- Microsoft Technologies - Sharepoint, C#, VB, etc.
- Network Engineering and Architecture - Telecom and Enterprise level design
- System Administrators - Got good Exchange skills? You can be very valuable.
- Solid Help Desk technicians - someone who can troubleshoot and have good people skills.
- Good DBA’s
- Web-based technologies
What are things anyone should have beyond these?
- Good people skills
- Job longevity and career progression (people who job hop tend to raise questions unless some good explanations are in order and hopefully the job hopping is leading to better career paths/growth)
- Professionalism - you can have all the skills in the world but if don’t present well you probably will have a hard time landing a good job with a great company
- College degree - cannot stress the importance of this. Don’t really care what the degree is but get one. It shows that you have discipline (for the most part)
So how do you get this experience? Well, school is one avenue. Passion and desire is another if you are in another field (by that I mean studying late at night, playing with technology on your own time, etc). Volunteering for non-profits and organizations that might not be able to hire you but will let you help them out. Mentoring under someone who is knowledgeable. Finding an entry-level job to get your foot in the door.
For example, my co-worker is working on placing some NOC techs for a local datacenter and the position is entry level work. Nothing too exciting but it’s a great step for someone who wants to get into network engineering and administration down the road. Just need someone with some techy skills and a desire to learn and grow.
