South Carolina Gaming Industry
I like to play video games. Whether on a console, a PC, or even web-based, I just enjoy playing games. In my quest for new games to try out and play I stumble across a variety of gaming company websites to see what games they make and read up on the company behind the game. With WiiWare coming out soon for the Nintendo Wii it’s going to be pretty cool to see new games and ideas come from a variety of development houses.
That got me thinking, I wonder if there are any game development companies in South Carolina?
So after doing some extensive web searching I have yet to find any. Bummer.
Right now most major game development (in the US at least) is done in places like Austin/Houston, TX; California; Seattle, WA; Boston, MA; New York, and Raleigh-Durham, NC. If you ever visit those places you’ll see a good number of companies and development houses. I’ve been noticing that Georgia is starting to aggressively tout itself as a game dev friendly state and if you check out their Association website you can see a good number of companies with a presence in Georgia.
Alas, South Carolina isn’t among those places where high-quality game development is being done. Which is a shame. This area has great potential because cost of living is lower, there are some good business incentives for companies to establish here, and I think the talent pool is pretty decent.
