Headhunter Diaries ~ Mowing the 1st Week Down (Almost)

Well, not sure if I’m actually mowing the week down but time has definitely flown by this week. I’ve been learning a ton about the industry, how recruiting works, how to research and source, and more.

(BTW, this Edy’s flavor ice cream is insanely good) <– Sorry. Weak moment. I just finished a bowl of it while writing this post… :)

Today I was doing some telephone role playing with my boss. I felt like I was in Oral Communications class back in college. Going through a couple of sample phone calls and trying to present myself as a competent recruiter. Needless to say there were a few good laughs from both of us when I goofed big time. What really helped me was writing out a sample script with some guidelines that helped me to keep on track and not forget why I was calling. Things went a lot smoother after that but I still have a bit to go.

One of the interesting things I’ve noticed about the industry is that working a search can take a good while. You sift through a lot of rubble to find that gem of a candidate that’s the right fit for the company you are representing. I know a lot of job hunters out there think that when they e-mail their resume to a recruiter they’ll hear back immediately and get an offer right off the top, or they think they are the only candidate the recruiter is working to place, but it doesn’t work that way. We have to look at that resume (among lots of others) and see if the jobs we are placing will be a good fit for that person. Then we have to do some telephone interviews and reference checks and more calls and more searching. It’s a pretty involved process and I hope to divulge some more into it as I learn and complete some searches.

Also, if anyone knows of a good Sr. Business Analyst with a background in the manufacturing, ERP implementation, and some .Net framework experience, then I’d love to hear from you about it. Got a nice opportunity for someone with those skills.

I won’t be posting this weekend as I’ll be out of town so things should resume on their regular schedule on Monday. Oh, and don’t forget to set those clocks forward on Saturday!
