Headhunter Diaries ~ First Week Impressions.

Well, I made it through my first week at FGP Technology. The week flew by it seemed. I guess when you are in a new environment and soaking everything in time just goes by. :) I really enjoyed my first week, even though most of it was training and paperwork. By the end of the week I was on the phones doing some initial sourcing and calling. Hey, what better way to learn than by doing? I did fumble my way through a few calls but overall I think I did alright. Always room for improvement though. Oh, and I’m sure glad I took Oral Communications in college!

I’ve enjoyed getting to know a lot of the other recruiters and support personnel in our company. They’ve all been very friendly and helpful with advice, tips, and welcomes. No wonder FGP is one of the best places to work at in SC. The culture and morale are fantastic (that and breakfast on Friday’s! yeah!)

As I’m learning my way around the recruiting world it’s been interesting to see things from this side of the coin. In the past as an IT guy trying to use a recruiter it always seemed that to me there were no other candidates for a job. I always figured that if I submit my resume they’ll find me a job immediately and make me their first priority. The reality is that the client (company looking for the employee) is the first priority. They are the ones paying the company the fee for finding that right hire. Of course, as recruiters, if we have a great candidate we will do our best to place them with that company. Think of it as a puzzle. You have all these pieces of which comprise of the client and candidates and you are trying to find the perfect fit. It’s a fun challenge, especially when all you have to work off initially is a resume.

I’m sure as I gain experience I’ll be picking up more things on what to do and what not to do as a recruiter and even as a candidate. I’ll be sure to share those experiences here!

To close things out for today’s post, here is a great article I read off Slashdot.org today: The 7 dirtiest jobs in IT.

Again, I apologize for the late post. I’m only able to post in the evenings for a bit. I’ll try to do some posting during my lunch hour as I get time. Have a great week!
